Regulations
The Canadian Coast Guard has implemented regulations to enforce that boat
operators have a minimum level of boating safety education that is demonstrated
by proof of competency. The proof of competency is a "Pleasure Craft Operators
Card". The regulations have been introduced in three phases. The first two
phases are in place.
 | Any person, any age, operating a
power driven boat under 4 metres (13 feet) now requires a "Pleasure Craft
Operators Card". (this came into effect on Sept. 15, 2002) |
 | All Younger boaters born after April 1, 1983 (age
25 and younger) now require a "Pleasure Craft Operators Card" to operate any
size power driven boat. (this came into effect on Sept. 15, 1999) |
 | On Sept. 15, 2009 any person operating a power boat will require
an "Pleasure Craft Operators Card" |
What happens if I do not have my "Card"?
 | You may be fined ($250) if you do not have your "Card" |
 | Also, your insurance may be invalid. The new regulations make it
similar to car insurance - no license - no coverage. Your liability
insurance insurance as well as your boat coverage for damage, or loss may be
at risk. Be sure that anyone who uses your boat has their "Card" if
required. |
Do I have to carry the "Card" with me?
 | You are required by the regulations to carry the card with you at all
times while you are boating as proof of competency. Just like driving a car
you may be stopped and asked to show your drivers license and registration for
your car and may be asked the same two questions while driving your boat. This
means that you are also required to carry the license ( commonly called
registration ) for your boat. |
